Château-fort at the top of a pass

This château is truly an entrance to the Hautes Cévennes at the foot of Mont Lozère. The chateau, located on the edge of the Cevennes National Park, registered as UNESCO World Heritage in June 2011 au UNESCO World, Heritage, provides us with over 10 centuries of history.
Built in the 11th century to stand guard over the Regordane Way (today the GR 700 hiking path), the Château de Portes is a marriage between a medieval fortress and a Renaissance bastion. Its history is overwhelmingly rich and its architecture atypical and unique in Europe. It is a classified historical monument. The spur which forms a 42° angle is part of its originality and has earned for it the name of the “Ship of the Cevennes". It is 32 meters high and as such provides breathtaking views over the surrounding valleys. There are countless hiking opportunities all around.
