The lasting link between water and history

Ever since the beginning of time, the Rhône and the sea, at times working together, at times working against each other, have shaped the landscape. Never has such a combination given rise to such a noble landscape as Aigues-Mortes.

The unending plots of land give way to a succession of lagoons, marshes, channels, ponds, pine forests and dunes. In this maze, life took hold and a system of exchanges was set up. It was not until the Middle Ages and the acquisition of the territory by Saint Louis the King that Aigues-Mortes finally emerged into the light and became a historical starting-point for the Crusades.

The town is still completely encircled by its rugged fortifications and the spirit of Saint Louis comes to life each summer with the swirling crowds of people.
