Roman Amphitheatre

Amphitheatre built at the end of the 1st century AD, this arena is one of the biggest in Roman Gaul. More than 20,000 spectators could attend the combats of gladiators which have since given way to bullfights, sports events and concerts of today. The amphitheatre, directly inspired by the Coliseum in Rome, is the best preserved of the Roman amphitheatres in the world today. This harmonious ellipse, measuring 133 meters by 101 meters, holds 24,000 places on 34 different levels of bleachers around a floor measuring 70m by 38m. Design was very sophisticated, for in addition to the regularity of the façade which is 21 meters high and has two levels each with 60 arches, it also has an advanced system of circulation better than many current designs, particularly on the underground floor.

This amphitheatre was designed for gladiator combat. In the Middle Ages it was transformed into a village with two churches, a small château and more than 200 houses – until 1812! In 1840, this amphitheatre was one of the first monuments on the very first list of Historical Monuments. Today it is used for bullfights, which started in 1863, and many other cultural events.
