Peccais, the Fort du Sel.

The remains of Fort Peccais are now lost at the end of the world in an inhospitable place…
On the contrary, from the date of creation of the first state tax on salt; the gabelle, by Philippe Le Bel in 1286 until its suppression by the revolution in 1790, co fort was the economic heart of the territory.
Peccais salt was redistributed throughout the kingdom via the Rhône.

During the Wars of Religion, the control of salt, a high-value product, became an important issue and the salt peccans needed protection.
In 1569, the construction of the fort ensured permanent control over the salt flats and the canals used to transport the salt. It is at the meeting point of the Bourgidou Canal and the Canal de
"Peccais à Sylvéréal".

It therefore becomes the lust of the warlords; who keeps Peccais holds the region!
In 1790 when the gabelle was abolished, the fort lost importance and was only guarded by a company of invalids and its condition fell into decay.
It returned to service during the last war, given its proximity to the coast: the occupant installed several shelters and blockhouses there.
The remains of the Fort de Peccais are awaiting development.
From this fort in Peccais, formerly a military post for royal agents; only the two tanks, the trapezoidal plane, as well as the molded base of a watch tower, have been preserved.

Access to the remains of the Fort is closed to the public for security reasons.
Free access around the Fort all year round.
