Ancient cave, place of pilgrimage

A statue of the Virgin is in the chapel of Sainte-Beaume: the cave was blessed under the title of ND-de-Consolation in 1647.
For a long time, we went up to the Sainte-Baume cave by paths.

It was not until the 19th century that the current route was laid out.
Besides, until that time, one accessed the cave only by the hermitage.
Inside, a staircase, different from the current one, led directly to the cave.
It was replaced by the access corridor, dug around 1880, a little higher, used today.

The cave measures from 25 m to 30 m in depth and fifteen meters in width.
It is the great balm (balm or balm, word of Gallic origin designating cave in Provençal), that is to say the most important of the caves located in the surroundings.

Ancient neolithic cave in which a chapel and a statue of the Virgin were built in the 17th century and became a place of pilgrimage.
Free pedestrian access, 2 km from Lirac in a natural wooded site to protect.
