Abbey palace and Mediterranean garden

As it celebrates 100 years of its renaissance, the abbey now has 2 stars in the Michelin Green Guide.

At the heart of the fort Saint-André which dominates Villeneuve-lez-Avignon (Gard), the Benedictine and royal abbey of Saint-André opens to visitors its sumptuous terraced gardens and its abbey palace. A rare place that blends, with harmony, the art of gardens, a mosaic of heritage and the history of Languedoc and Provence since the sixth century. Self-guided or guided tour from March 1 to November 1.
Art and music are also regularly invited to the abbey. Moments not to be missed.

Listed as one of the most beautiful in France, the abbey gardens are spread between the remains of Romanesque churches and tombs from the 6th century: beds of old roses, Mediterranean plants, olive trees and hundred-year-old pines. At the foot of the palace, a Tuscan-style parterre from the 16th century, decorated with basins, vases and sculptures runs alongside a pergola covered with wisteria and roses. On the heights of Mount Andaon, these balcony gardens offer a panoramic view of the Palais des Papes in Avignon
Strategic and spiritual place, the abbey reasons many historical facts. Hermitage of Saint Casarie, Benedictine monastery, Saint-André became a royal abbey in the 13th century, commanding over 200 priories. Redesigned at the end of the 17th century by the King's architect, Pierre Mignard, the abbey palace retains elegant vaulted rooms, a portal and a monumental staircase ... The mural paintings by Emile Bernard as well as numerous collections are also to be discovered during the visit guided.
